A Manifesto on Interactive Advertising Creativity

It's an old article - I missed it but it's well written and thought-provoking.

It talks about how in digital space - there isn't any memorable campaign that you could name. And the extension of the direct marketing culture drives response that lives on and carry forward to a lot of the online media marketing we do.

I love the analysis and insights the author provides to argue we need to bring back creativity to make campaigns that evoke human emotion.

I always believe in compelling creative are the ones that you make an emotion connection with. It hard to turn a bad idea into a good idea by executing it well. That's why it's important to get the project in to right strategic direction and plentiful of time to think and rethink on an idea before going into execution. Idea always come first. A beautiful design without a concept is just wallpaper.

In conclusion, the author urges agencies/publishers to:

1. Motivate greatness among your best creative people, for their work inspires consumers and customers alike.

2. Collaborate - creative agencies and publishers - with each other and within yourselves to develop outstanding advertising and communications products.

3. Assemble writers, designers, and technologists into teams that can engage the intellect and emotions of audiences and individuals across all channels, toward the goal of creating enduring brands.

4. Prove to your customers that causing the heart to beat quick is at least as important as making the mouse click.

Pursuing the art of persuasion is what I am passionate about - and it's an art form that easy to be learnt, yet never to be mastered.

"Let's return to a time when advertising and media conversation was owned by the creatives, the editors, and the impresarios -- when it was dominated by debates about the craft of persuasion, about what moves people. After all, isn't that the reason we're in this business?"

We got the winning idea for Stand Up 2 Cancer to advertise in Guitar Hero game for xbox. And each of us got an xbox too!!!!

"Three teams were pitched against each other at a real time campaign competition yesterday's two-hour Microsoft Gaming workshop. Team Guitar Hero, Team Lips and Team Halo each had to create a campaign for Stand up to Cancer. The winning team was Guitar Hero (woot!), which devised a campaign whereby actor-singer Jack Black would record a song which gamers could play along and would also be available for download - spreading message and raising money at the same time."

Day 6 since baby's gone

Last night, Jakob and went to have a walk close by. We saw so many doggies. We both realized since you experienced some loss, you are extra sensitive to the surroundings. To my surprise, it doesn't hurt as much anymore, I could see them and touch them. Afterall, they are all good beings. I will still miss that little guy, becoz he's very special to me. But I can't be sad for too long, I have so many great friends want to cheer me up. There are flowers, prayers, people I don't usually hear from they went out of their way to reach out to me. Even the president of the company left me a message. I then realized this city if full of loving people. I am thankful for that. That adds to the 51st reasons why I love Toronto (Toronto Life listed 50).

Day 3 since Tiger's gone

It's rough. But I think I made some progress. I had a lovely walk with Jakob. He took me to Terroni. We had a lovely lunch. There were some setbacks when I saw some doggies on the street and it's really hard to not to think back the scene when I passed by Wellington. I had a nap, I didn't dreamt of him. When I woke up, Jakob said he had something to show me. It was few pictures of his coworker took. On those pictures, it was a rainbow that happened after the rain and sun. I was relieved. I thought that's the most comforting thing to see. I think Tiger must be on his way to heaven. Meeting Olli (Jakob's daschund dog passed long time ago). Tiger loves new friends, so he shouldn't be lonely. It's still hard for me not to see his face every day I woke up. For 3 years, first thing in the morning is his face, beside my bed. He loves to wake up seeing me. It's hard. But I think Tiger wants to see me happy. It's sad for him to see me cry. I will be strong and not to make him worry in heaven.

Today my beloved dog, Tiger, got hit by a car and died. I can't imagine it living without him waking up with me every morning. He was there for me all the times, good and bad. I miss you so much Tiger. Please wait for me in heaven. Mommy loves you so much.

They asked pink-slipped workers to modify and upload business cards, with inspiring results

You've just been laid off. Included in your office detritus, still sitting in the trunk of the Toyota Corolla, are: paper clips, a can of Static Guard and a box of business cards.

A couple of guys in California have figured how to put one of those things to good use.

Cardsofchange.com, which launched 11 days ago, is encouraging pink-slipped workers around the world to modify their business cards – put an upbeat spin on the "What now, what next?" question and upload it to the site.

"We asked people to share one positive thing that came from their layoff," Tom Van Daele, the site's creative director, says by phone from Santa Monica. "It's a therapeutic message, actually."

Lily Tse, 31, lost her job as art director at a Toronto ad agency in mid-April. Hoping to comfort her, a friend emailed the link to cardsofchange.com.

Cliché though it sounds, she admits she started to feel less alone.

"I looked at all the people with awesome titles who worked at great companies from every part of the world," she says.

"You realize everybody's impacted. It's not local. You can't take it personally."

One card in particular inspired Tse to come to terms with her own layoff. Uploaded by Hildie Neuman, a former power broker at a top ad agency in New York, the card showed two thin X's drawn in black marker over her job title and contact information. A handwritten message filled a gully of white space in the middle: "I planned my daughter's wedding!"

Tse uploaded her own card on Saturday night.

She modified it by doodling clouds, a flower and a happy-faced sun. She kept her job title visible but added three extra little lines above it to tell the world that she's also a traveller, a chef and a photographer. Super-imposed over all that, in a cheery pink, sans-serif, ultra-modern font, is a cheeky message: "I just art-directed this card."

The abundance of folks on the site who worked in advertising is no coincidence.

The site itself is founded by ad geeks who went out on their own after losing work at major agencies. Cardsofchange.com was conceived during a brainstorming session for one of their new clients at their small advertising upstart, dubbed unknownlab, in Santa Monica.

Tamer Kattan, 38, and Van Daele, 28, worked together on the Nissan account at TBWA/Chiat/Day, a top California ad agency, when the company announced layoffs.

Kattan started at the company in 1991. "Within advertising, you have seniority," he says, "but you have seniority within a silo – depending on what brand you work on. Automotive is a category that suffers quite a bit during a recession."

After being laid off, Kattan spent time volunteering – reading to kids in libraries and schools around Los Angeles. "They're so honest," he says. "I know that I have a receding hairline now because of them. And that I'm short."

Van Daele and Kattan launched unknownlab in February.

"It's less glamorous, that's for sure," Kattan says. "We don't have an indoor park. We don't have this huge warehouse and free food and all that stuff, but the actual process of coming up with ideas and solving business problems is just as exciting.

"I don't think you need to have a big budget to have a great idea."

Jeremie Goldwasser, 28, an art director laid off less than two weeks ago from Young & Rubicam in Brussels, uploaded one of the most creative cards to date on the site.

He turned his business card into a paper plane. In capital letters on the plane's side, his message: "FLYING AWAY!" – his email address hand written on a separate white slip of paper attached at the rear like jet contrail.

"I felt pretty sad at first," Goldwasser says. "I'd been at Rubicam for four years. The Belgian advertising industry is really having a very tough time."

The bad news, though, has him thinking big.

"I'm still young and I believe to be really creative you have to start all over again, all the time. It's something I'm willing to do."

He's looking to pack up and find work abroad.

Canada is at the top of his list.

"I speak perfect French and I speak English and I don't like when it's too hot, anyway."

Tse, meanwhile, is heading to Cannes next month to accept a National Advertising Award for an interactive project she art-directed.

"I'm sure someone else will appreciate my talent when the economy gets better. I can go back to doing what I was meant to, just at a different company."

Boy. I can't sleep - still totally hyped! WE GOT GOLD BABY!

Other than this is the biggest surprise I had this year. I am happy because of these 5 reasons (in no particular order of importance):

#1 Our entries were not selected to be reimbursed.

#2 It's the 2nd time in a different category Interactive which is what I have much less experience in. TWICE - GOLD. TWICE - CANNES!

#3 I prove a lot of Simon Cowell's wrong, including bunch didn't think I am versatile enough to manage both medium.

#4 Last time, I wandered Southern France and Paris alone. This time round, I am a + 1 to Germany after Cannes with a man I love on his birthday!

#5 I am proud of myself and my partner pulling it all together despite we have been working 80 hr works weeks since New Year. And it's an unusual task for a producer to wear a writer's hat. Yet look - magic happens. How many producers can you name can write on demand to the EXACT word count max. 50 words, no more, no less to the requirement for the awards. I made him sweat/swear. A lot.

I feel a bit like Susan Boyle (Asian style) - altho I really hate her hair.

Given the awkward situation before the winning, I want to thank EVERYONE OF YOU out there - believe in me/us - helped me/us, verbally, spirtually support me/us. I know people never believe I remember when they helped, but I always keep it close my ♥. You know who you are for being kind/supportive when I most needed it.

NOW IS THE TIME TO GET TRASHED, BITCH!

These are the 6 I watched/will be watching:

The Red Chapel by Mads Brügger
The subject matter of this film is what caught my attention. A crew of Danish folks convinced the North Korean government to let them bring Koreans pleasure by showing them what comedy is about, that's how they got in the closed country and got this film made. The film itself is kinda quirky. The so-called play they were rehearsing is bizarre. I admire the courage of the director. Becoz I saw the VICE travel guide to North Korea, so really this is not a surprise to see how crazy the country is. Everyone seems to try so hard to pretend Kim Song II is the greatest. The crazy thousand people synchronized dance is one thing that really creeps me out. Wasted energy goes in practicing the most useless shit. Just be thankful we live in a imperfect, but at least somewhat normal and free country.

Burma VJ by Anders Høgsbro Østergaard
Another brilliant creation from yet another Danish filmmaker. He document a really brave young man who live in Burma, a closed country with zero democracy. No news coverage could ever leak out the country. To show the world the truth of Burma, he risked his life and recruit over 15 like-minded individuals to go and secretly record the demonstrations of Burma and sent them thru sateillite to all over the world. The 2007 Sept Burma demonstration results in a shooting of a Japanese journalist was filmed and broadcast on BBC. It's amazing how brave and single-minded these young people are. Again, thankful for being in a free country, after seeing how insane North Korea and Burma is.

Orgasm Inc by Liz Canner
A film about how pharma companies love to make up condition and sell drugs to healthy normal people. It's not a huge revelation but then the investigation of how lack of sexual desire of women being linked to huge profit is fascinating. The film was well researched, and narrated with multiple point of views. The most educated 2 hr I spent for a sat afternoon.

Carmen meets Borat by Mercedes Stalenhoef
I was initially drawn by the eye-catching title. I thought it's a jackpot for the filmmaker that when she was filming a girl in Romania, it would turn into the fact that that village was about to sue Borat's film co. Although I find it's a stretch to say that little girl actually meets Borat - it's an interesting study of how lives is like in Romania. Just wonder if that girl got paid for being filmed in this doc again.

Art and Copy by Doug Pray
Some of the ad campaigns are well documented and well known, it's interesting to see how some of the veterans of the ad world despite their age, their minds are still sharp and as charismatic as the were in their young age. Ad people are entertainers and performers, as the film director put it, I found that It's totally true. It's inspiring to see how many of those ad legends' upbringings are extremely similar to Don Draper in Mad Men, meaning Matthew Weiner the Mad Men producer really did his home work for the show.

Random thoughts on marriage and existential crisis

After half way through prepping myself for the movie "Revolutionary Road" by reading the book, just one thought keeps popping up in my head, ie, may be marriage is an idea that is well-intended, like Communism, yet it's ill-equipped to be practiced by human race. Because human nature is not designed to be happy with only one person forever. This is very similiar to the idea of communism, the ideal is that everyone is equal, no one is richer or poorer than others. It sounds like a great idea on paper, yet, it's something not designed for the human, who by nature is greedy.

So, just a thought on that.

Moving on to the other subject, Happiness with the captial "H" (aka the existential crisis), which is a topic that usually lingers in my mind, I would say every couple months. The light bulb that went off was that may be there isn't such a thing as Happiness. It's dark yet liberating at the same time. Imagine if we could assume happiness doesn't exist, there's no need to find it. This thought, as ironic it might seems, actually might gives us peace of mind, which might leads to true happiness. Most of the time, the ultimate reason why human can't be happy is when they try to find Happiness, they can't find it. The frustration of not able to find it, actually makes them unhappy. May be by accepting the fact that happiness might not exist, letting go the concept of finding happiness. Instead of searching and experiencing the lows of not able to find what we are looking, and just be. By doing that, may be that's the way to be truly Happy.

I kinda dig this thought.

Just want to jog down few thoughts here after watching few docs this year...

• Kids and Money by Laura Greenfield
Luv how the filmmaker make it to the point, and the composition of how she frames the interviewees etc. It's short and to the point.

• Emoticons by Heddy Honigmann
The pace is a bit slow. But I got the msg about how Internet was usually seen as a bad thing to teenagers, but for some it's actually could be therapuetic and help them to cope the harshness of realities.

• Tiger Spirits by Min Sok Lee
Excellent documentary about the renuification of North and South Korea. Give me more insight about how isolated North Korea is - even to people in Korea, it's own country.

• Mechanical Love
I see it's an interesting topic. The pace is a bit slow. And the conclusion is ambigious.

• Peter and Ben by Pinny Grylls
Sweet documentary about animal bonding with human, just luv it. Reminds me of sweet films like Lars and the Real Girl and Punch Drunk Love.

• The Art Star and the Sudanese Twins by Pietra Brettkelly
Great doc about how Vanessa Beecroft tries to make her art in africa, the acting of paying people to act in her art, could suggest the modern day slavery. And the controversial adoption just let people in or out of the art world do a double take on her and her art.

All in all - loved the experience. Documentaries have always been my interests and passion. It would the project that I would be most proud of if I could make a documentary, in this life.

It's not a huge crazy site, yet I am glad they picked it to publish. And just got an email today from them that 2 other pictures from New York City are selected. Pretty nice! Ongoing travel photography experiment is definitely the lifetime goal.

Just arrived here at 6 am this morning. Typing this entry while I am waiting for the transfer to Singapore, then Cambodia. Reflecting on the past 2 months, it has a been a heck of a ride. This vacation was in the plan, yet, back to Toronto for 2 weeks, then head out to Europe again is an awesome surprise. I guess that's life, you don't know what you don't know.

I took advantage of my idle time here, browsing through this book called "1000 places to see before you die", found some great inspirations for next turn of travelling. It helps me to pinpoint down few places I want to go in Europe. Here's the list belows:

2007 so far has been good. It might has to do with something that 1) my birthday is on a saturaday; 2) My new company allows the birthday girl to get a freebie day off; and 3) at 29th, I have a group of great friends and an adorable puppy roommate.

Thanks to my peeps who came out with me to laugh our butts off at Yuk Yuks. It was a female stand up star in the mix which was pretty amazing. Despite it was a freezing night with bone-chilled wind and wind chill of -20 C, everyone seems to enjoyed themselves. And just that, adds to the fact that 2007 would be a fantastic year.

Why I said that? Mainly becoz' I have put on a lot of my new year resolution on hold. And it's NOT GOOD! March is half way through, and I want to do a quick check in as for the status of my personal goals. On another unrelated note, I signed up for Dragonboat again this year. I know I said I want to try something new, I do, but at the same time, I guess it's a good rountine to keep me active.

So saw David Copperfield last sat with sister, mom and dad. It's alright, not mind-blowingly great. Lots of the tricks are kinda done. And they just looked deja-vu to me. Unimpressed. And for some reasons I thought David Copperfield looks way hotter when he was younger.

Obsessive Consumption.

An art concept that speaks to the crazy consumerism we live in and ironically links closely to my own profession. I am one of the culprits who makes it our culture and the surroundings we embrace. But I do recognize and aware, and at the same time, appreciate people talk about it, make fun about it and hence, make it's an interesting subject for more people to think about, when they are not busy shopping.

Strategy: Identify the filters through which you view the world. Acknowledge your history without being controlled by it.

You know and experience this world only through the perceptions that you create. You have the ability to choose how you perceive any event in your life, and you exercise this power of choice in every circumstance, every day of your life. No matter what the situation, you choose your reaction, assigning meaning and value to an event.

We all view the world through individual filters, which influence the interpretations we give events, how we respond, and how we are responded to. Be aware of the factors that influence the way you see the world, so you can compensate for them and react against them. If you continue to view the world through a filter created by past events, then you are allowing your past to control and dictate both your present and your future.

Filters are made up of fixed beliefs, negative ideas that have become entrenched in your thinking. They are dangerous because if you treat them as fact, you will not seek, receive or process new information, which undermines your plans for change. If you "shake up" your belief system by challenging these views and testing their validity, the freshness of your perspective can be startling.

From his website, it's quite an empowering thought. When this life strategy is applied, there really isn't much is impossible.

Leafs vs. Devil

Went to a hockey game tonight. Wow! It's addictive. Now I see why people pay this much money to see a real game. Rob was nice enough to treat me. It's like $187 per tix. Felt a little bad after seeing the price. ;-P

After all great game - leafs won 2-1, so that's good. Went to Bier Market after, interesting hang out place... since at least 2 years ago - I haven't been to the area. I got nostalgic since the Esplanade was where my first agency was. I used to walk to work from Go Station every day 4 years ago.

Now after 2 days at the Blue, I really need to put my snowboarding attitude into practice, when it comes to life situations: when you fall, GET UP! That's what I like about it. Also - poker teaches me life lesson too... you never if you have a bad or good hands until the end. That sums up all :-)

Pre-holiday reflection

So in a week or so will be 2006. I set my year of 2004 as my vacation year. I wanted it to be a breather year so I can refocus the purpose of my life and chill and enjoy.

So what about 2005? I think I gained a lot of new experiences.

• Tried Snowboarding - stilll need tons of practice
• Visited Kyoto, Osaka and Shanghai
• Tried Lavalife
• Joined Dragonboat team
• Won 2 medals first time ever in life
• Tried volleyball
• Did first TV commercial
• Went to to film fest and saw Michel Gondry in person
• Went to 1st time fashion show
• Dated 2 white guys
• Learnt the art of move on quick
• Learnt the great love of self

I am yet to draft up my to-do list for 2006... still have few days to ponder upon.

Recollection of last weekend's events...

Fri
Went out with Jen to a 80s prom. Quite silly and fun. This band called Fantasy played all 80s music. This reminded me of 80s was such a happy times. To most people, it's their high school, to me it's my childhood. I recognized some songs, coz' I was still in Hong Kong during that time. But definitely fun times.

Sat
Hot pot with the grade school gang. It's kinda pack but I guess it's worth it, coz' its' the real thing from HK.

Sun
Went to Mochizuki, a Japanese restaurant with rotating sushi table. Grab what you like and pay after. It's kinda cute. Paul and I were trying to stack the plates up to the ceiling. Also tried the really sweet Sake, it's not clear kinda milky white. I don't usually like sake, but the one we had were kinda nice.

Mon
Bought a ribbon door bell and a singing tree with high heels that sings "Santa Baby". Now it feels like Christmas in my lilypad.

Amazing Grey-ce. Did that with my coworkers at Grey. Denise is our Managing Director of D + I and Steve is the Web Designer. We had SO MUCH FUN!!! That's all I did all day, the shot was taken at a store for the task of dressing in Halloween costume.

Same day was the launch of Stella MacCartney's stuff @ H&M. I got 2 items, but then on 2nd thought, they are not that great. So I returned them.

Auction is too much fun. I bought the Clinque basket for $220, which so much stuff in it, like lotion, perfume, candle, 3 eye shadow, blush, lipstick, eyeliner, 2 brushes, cleanser...
The total would easily cost over $400. Very happy :-D Auction is addictive.

Had a really eventful weekend. Went to a fashion show, thanks to my friend Francis, who knows some designers there giving away free invites. I felt so short there with all the models hanging out there. It was really fun and I felt like a celeb to be on the seating area just comment them like those reporters I saw on Fashion TV. After we went to Crush Wine bar on King West and tasted some very fine Fois Gras, um... so good.

Sat Oct 22
On to sat morning, woke up at 5 am and did the CN Tower Stair climb with my friend Paul. It's the first time in my life doing something extreme like this. Pretty crazy. But I am glad I did it. My time was 36 mins. It wasn't very good compared to my friend's time, which is 15 mins! Crazy firefighter.

Sun Oct 23
Day trip in Milton. Paul showed me around of this small town. It's the 2nd time I have been here and I didn't realized Ontario has some very beautiful little hills. With the fall colours, I was so impressed with the scenery there. Too bad I left my camera phone somewhere, I don't have pics to prove it. But the picture kinda stamped in my memory and I might paint a pretty picture of it later.

Was browsing CorpWatch website and found this link. I was reading this particular article on the massive beautiful resort in Kuwait that is frequently visited and enjoyed by top executives of KBR, a company that was owned by Dick Cheney. Wow, they know how to live life I tell ya. Just the thought of these are the profit earned in sacrifice of the lives of sons and daughters of Americans and Iraqis, make me kinda sick.

Why we fight?

This is the title of the documentry I saw last night. A really ambitious documentry by Eugene Jarecki. The film title was a title that was used a series of educational films produced by the US govt in the 60s' to talk to the public about why they went into wars. "Why we fight?" was the question that the Director keeps asking. Through interviews of different people, including veterans, government officials of the white house, a dropout student about to go to services, head of organization of Public Intergrity as well as a refugee from Vietname war, to draw an argument of why Americans need to go to wars. It is certainly no sercret to most of us that, the true reason behind the smoke screens of fighting for freedom, is to support the enormous industry of manufacturing weapons and military services at ground zero.

The most interesting point of the movie though, is not the apparent motive, but the speech of the former US president, Dwight Eisenhower. He predicted the consequences of the "military industrial complex" in 1950's. To put this into context, the Sept 11 event is clearly the classic example of the consequences that Eisenhower was referring to, 50 years ago. Watching this film, studying history texts or watching news, doing any of the above just reminds me of how forgettful is human race. When you only focus on your daily lives on a micro point-of-view, you tends to forget the seeds of wrongdoing you planted 20 years ago might end up resulting some castrophrophic incidents.

Another striking part of the film was the interview with the refugee of the Vietname war, Ann Duong. Her identity was captioned as the Muition Specialist in the US gov't lab (scientist for who studies explosives to be used in bombs for wars). As a refugee herself, she was probably glad to start new lives in the States when she was 13, who was thrilled to have the opportunity to get education, to receive a schlorship to go to Ivy League, and handed a well-paid job in the gov't. Yet, to look at the whole thing in a macro scale, she was just in the midst of the cycle of helping the state to make a better war in another countries, which in turn would result in more refugees like herself. This particular story really hits me. It's almost tragic to see as human, we are likely be trapped in our fates.

The theme of what comes around goes around shines through in the story of the Vietnam war veteran, who also the retiree of the NYPD, whose son was killed in Sept 11.

After hearing all these stories from Amercians dissecting the intentions and motives of wars, I can't help but feel deeply empathic to them. They are in a way betrayed by their gov't who exploit their patriotism to support a cunning agenda of the very privleged group of members in the society, who use wars as a banner to fight for freedom, but indeed to support their infinite greeds for personal net worth.

On that note, is military industry the ultimate way to make money? Is profit the ultimate answer? Why can't we think of a better business idea like organic farming or something to do with better energy conservation technology. Throughout the film, I notice the Director interviewed someone from this organization called The Center for Public Intergrity. I did a google search and found out it's an advocacy group that teach us to be more viligent about what are we being fed by the media/press. Further to this line of researching, I found few other sites that service the similiar educational purpose.

So why they fight? The retiree of the US defense dept. answered it, because no one threw the towel and say "I am not doing it anymore." Most Americans are interwined in the mesh of this military-industrial complex in some way, at all levels, it's almost impossible to just call it quit at the stake of their survival.

Once a little while, in my comfortable world of status quo, it's crucial for me to watch a movie that reminds me of what the world is made of. Keep me consicous of my surroundings and to be interrogative about the landscape of world politics. As it might seems it's not something that should concern me as much. It is, however, everyone's responsbilities to at least be aware of, and alert about, what's really going on.

Jeez, that was an intense Tues evening to watch a movie that will make me ask so many questions. My brain is hurting...

New hair cut and Stella McCartney

I had my spiral perm since Jan, my curls are getting uncontrollable. So for the past 2 weeks, I can only wear ponytails as my style and it's time for a change. Went to hair salon to day to get a fix... did a straightening to my hair and had a trim. I look differently (picture to come). This hair reminds me of how I looked in university, I always wear it straight and long. I hope the feedback I get on Tues is not too bad from people...

Was reading magaiznes at Salon and heard that Stella McCartney and Adidas are making a new line. It's totally cool. I always like Chloe and her design, she's definitely on my top ten list for fashion designers. Jeez I really don't need more ideas to spend money.

Was at the AGO last night, just went becoz' it was free. Saw few exhibitions, nothing really exciting, except the Seth comics collection and the discovery of this really cool artist David Shirgley.

I was looking at the gallery shop and found this little postcard book. It's full of irony and really nasty sarcasm. I was just laughing in tears becoz' it's something so obvious yet no one has the guts to say it. His website got some really cool stuff too.

I am thinking of my lifetime top ten so far:

1. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
simple idea that everyone who loved and has lost love can relate to, brilliant writing that is flawlessly executed, I really admire the oringinality of the Director's way to portray how past memories work in our brains, they work in the most non-linear way and creep out to catch you in the middle of no-where.
2. Amelie
A feel-good movie that is not preachy, yet warm, imaginative and just pure memorable
3. Old Boy
One of the few truly mind-twisting yet extremely original movie that I could never forget I watched it, beautifully art directed.
4. A.I.
I actually cried when I saw it, there's something about this movie which touches on the selfishness of human made me think...
5. Memento
A play of time and space that makes you want to just watch it again and again to figure how did he do it.
6. American Beauty
Dark and ironic yet true - like life. Same guy who does "Six Feet Under" - Alan Ball.
7. Pulp Fiction
No need to explain just cool and unforgettable.
8. Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter and Spring
A very zen and meditative movie that got me thinking the cycles of life.
9. Chung King Express
The best of Kar-Wai Wong in my personal opinion.
10. Before Sunset/Sunrise
I never thought of a movie could only be made of 1 conversation from start to finish yet, I didn't get bored of it.
The conversation was so deep and intriguing that if that happens to me I would fall in love with that person 100%.
11. Bitter Moon
It's not the most well-executed movie in terms of art direction, production budget etc, yet the story depicts the simple idea of how when love ends, the extreme of jealousy takes over and vice versa. Just very powerful movie that makes me think.
12. Punch Drunk Love
Adam Sandler was so cool in it. It's alternative love story that is equally sweet but not in the formula of the typical Hollywood movies.

The past week was quite an adventure for me, as I was at my first ever TV production. We were on-location at a house near the Bayview and York Mills areas. Quite a nice house. At the set, I have the chance to see how the Director work with the actors and actresses. It's quite an experience. And just so many factors come into play, like the use of camera angles, lighting, the acting etc... The shoot itself is simple yet to get the perfect take, it takes time and lot of energy to get the best composed frame and acting.

On the next day for the rushes, the Director Mark, he invited us to a really cool spot called The Spoke Club. It is hidden in the building where the Amsterdam Brewing Co. is located. Great food, great conversation. I also admire the fact that Directors have the passion and visions to produce great movies and commercials. It takes a lot of talents and tenacity to make to that level. And just this experience that I was involved in the TV made me wonder how would it be like to be a Director. It's probably a crazy day dream of me... but if I ever could do a movie, I want to do something like Michael Moore, whose works would say something to challenge how people think.

On that same note, I was browsing the film fest lineup, I found this movie called "Workingman's Deaths" by Michael Glawogger, very interesting. It's about some of the most dangerous labour work you could ever imagined, which you would think they would be replaced by machines, given we have evolved so much technologically. Yet, the reality is, some people are still risking their lives by just making a living everyday. I am still yet to watch this film, but just looking at the description, I can imagine it's one of those movies that would make me appreciate more about what I already have and truly be gracious and not critical about my status quo.

Was at Dagmar's wedding last sunday. It's the most extravagant wedding I have ever been to. This ice sculpture is one of the many cool things to wow the guests there, the other stuff would include oyster bar, chocolate fountain, polish dancers and a 8-course dinner. I was stuffed for the next 3 days and could still remember the taste of the 3 martinis I had. Well, of course I will remember that's my friend's wedding as well. (phew...)

What a neat little cozy restaurant... we went there for Matt's go away sort-of. I had lamb chops (what else, when it's on the menu) it's so nice to go out in the middle of the week and a nice dinner makes the week seems shorter. Seeing people leave makes me sad. :-(

Another note on food...
Had an awesome night @ Lobby. I have always thought it's cool spot for lounging and drinks, yet its menu for dinner was AMAZING!! I had the best corn chowder and seared tunas ever. Coupled with some white wine from Chile, that was an awesome awesome night. Thanks for a very generous anonymous patron's support for the night! :-)

Watched "The Motorcyle Diaries", quite an interesting story, I didn't realized it's about a real-life story of the Cuban leader Che Guevara. The idea of "let the world change you and then you change the world" is powerful. This idea got me thinking about the possibility of the new and improved self could be beneficial to the world some day.

On a totally unrelated subject, I had the best chocolate souffle ever at MBCo. My new to-cook list would include making this heavenly invention at home. um...

Went to my Truffles the restaurant @ 4 Seasons today. It's a place I always wanted to go and to die for... turn out, not the best, but didn't knocked my socks either. Did have amazing conversation with Cindy though. A boyless date at a great restaurant with good food, wine and ambience is all I can ask for for a perfect, summer Tuesday night.

um the taste of the gapachzo still kinda lingers... susur is the next on my gourmet scouting checklist.

Started my 1st dragonboat practice last sat. It was a whole lot of fun. Looking back 1 year ago, I could never imagine myself to be doing this. It's magical that dragonboat truly is a team thing, when all paddles hit the water at the same time, the boat just flys! It amazes me as it's so different from rowing. Last night before I went to bed, deep in my heart I felt so grateful that in the past year I have met so many great new friends and people. Everyone has been extremely nice and supportive to me. Those people probably have no idea what they have done to help this girl to find herself again. But I thank them with my greatest sincerity. I would like dragonboat to be only the 1 of many new things I will keep tackling on in 2005.

When insomnia kicks in ...

Can't sleep tonight, staying at my parent's house, it's 3 in the morning. Can't be more somber than ever. Not worrying, not upset by anything, I guess I blame the black tea of the Chinese restaurant.

On a saturday night, around this time, I could easily be half drunk, being hammered by post-drunk headaches and in deep dream-less sleep, with shoes still on my feet.

Or I would be tired from a week's errands, work, chores, mundane daily routines and felt into light sleep of dreaming weird things that I don't remember the next morning.

But not tonight. It's a sleepless night tonight.

I could remember on a insominiac night like this, I would be scribbling my notepad with to-dos and ideas for projects. Some of those on my list would be my own website, a painting about the scene outside my window, my headboard, my unfinished piece of jewellry... so on, so forth.

Yet tonight, with Coralie Clement's voice singing softly in the background, I am thinking... Is it a blessing to not have anyone to worry, to miss? Or is it a shame? Would I be the subject of the wandering mind of someone who's also awake in the middle of the night?

I wonder.

Without sounding like Carrie in Sex in the City pondering about relationships, it always hard for an individual to take a position in relationship. When you are single, you long for meeting someone. When you are with someone, you wonder will it last. There's always worries and concerns on the back of your mind. In the game of finding luv, I especially like one of her quotes, "some people are settling down, some people are settling, some people never settles for anything less." Is "settling down" settling in some way? With limited supply of subject of affection, is it even possible to not to settle anything for less? Is there such thing as "the one"?

I wonder.

It's only 30 more days away I will leave the cold and be surrounded by cheery blossom. What else could be better than travel 100,000 miles away, leave your rountine and discover something new and exciting. No wonder people always say vacation is the biggest motivation to live the daily rountine. I wonder how the weather in Tokyo and Osaka would be like...? It's been at least 13 years that I have visited Tokyo - it must has changed so much, I can't wait to see it again. :-D

My friend sent me an email with my favourite Japanese character in a lunch box! Thank goodness even though my Toastman is hiding behind the disguise of squash bowl and salad, I am still able to recognise his adorable face! He's with his best friend Curryman!
